William E. Stoner

William E. Stoner is a co-founder and attorney at Stoner Grannis LLP. He is an accomplished civil litigator specializing in complex commercial litigation and has over 34 years of experience.

He began his legal career at Lilluck McHose & Charles (now Pillsbury Winthrop LLP) in 1981 as a litigation associate, moving to full partner in 1987. In 2000 he left to join Hennigan Bennett & Dorman LLP (now McKool Smith Hennigan), a securities and intellectual property law firm based in Los Angeles, CA.

William thrives in cases involving business torts, emerging companies, copyright infringement, securities, legal and accounting malpractice, contracts, real estate litigation, intellectual property and employment disputes. He has been a vigorous champion for the rights of consumers and investors victimized by unfair, fraudulent and deceptive business practices. He also has defended businesses and individuals wrongly accused of misconduct. These cases have required William to oppose the largest, best-funded and most experienced law firms in the nation.

William has played central roles in obtaining millions of dollars of recovery for his clients in both state and federal courts as well as high stakes arbitration proceedings. In his capacity as a defense attorney, he has obtained victories for clients facing hundreds of millions of dollars in potential liability. He has also been instrumental in negotiating complex settlements on steeply discounted terms for clients facing large liability exposures. At other times, William has been instrumental in negotiating large settlements for clients who have been harmed by fraud, copyright infringement, contractual breaches, or other misconduct at the hands of unscrupulous businesses and individuals.

William graduated Magna Cum Laude from Wittenberg University with a BS in Economics and Accounting. William passed his CPA during college and this expertise allows him to use his economics and accounting backgrounds to effectively enhance the resolution of civil litigation cases. William is especially adept at working with economists to generate damage models for our clients that can vastly increase verdicts and settlements. He earned his Juris Doctor from Duke University in 1981 where he was a member of the Duke Law Journal editorial board.

William E. Stoner is a member of the American Bar Association, Los Angeles County Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Association, State Bar of California, and Association of Business Trial Lawyers. He is an avid skier, golfer, youth softball coach, president of the La Canada High School Booster Club, proud husband, father, and grandfather living in La Canada.
